When things started out, it was a joke between an unsigned american pop artist named JQ and a Canadian online promoter that’s made a serious head way in the industry thanks to twitter. The whole idea of calling yourself Bankrupt, seemed on the outset like a crazy idea. But as some ideas go, the wildest ideas can become the most profitable. “It started out as a joke, I didn’t think that it would really work, but as it turns out with decline of the economy the buzz just built up. People just couldn’t forget the name. The funny part is, I was actually bankrupt at the time”.
What started out as a couple hundred people and a few small mixtapes is now at almost ten thousand followers, a online station, and he’s attracted some attention from even a publicist that worked with MTV and tickled the ear of some Maybach Music reps.
His latest mixtape release nicknamed “The Punisher” features a whopping 30 unsigned artists, most of which is considered to be gangster rap, aggressive hip hop. He’s really made his mark with this angry release. Included in this mix, is a super controversial track, the Hard In The Paint remix by Double P; which has gained recent noteriety because of a real beef between Double P and TYGA of Young Money Entertainment. “Yeah, some djs refused to play it, saying that their career would be over. I wasn’t surprised to hear that because Young Money owns Canada’s most love artist Drake. When I heard that Young Money got mad about it, I laughed about it because that means my job was done well”. In all of this Dj Bankrupt remains humble. “Starting from the bottom is always a struggle, but I think that’s what brings me and the artists together. That’s where we see eye to eye, and promote each other based on respect.”
Since twitter has changed the game for the industry, it should be noted that Dj Bankrupt is the man behind Mixtape Watch that searches twitter for people dropping tapes, and retweets the information to his following. Dj Ice Mike of Definition Djs says, “Mixtape Watch shines a light on mixtapes.” So an artist with as little as 20 followers all of a sudden has a massive platform to release their new music. Combined with his show Mixtape Mailbox, he’s created some exciting opportunities for young artists like Oktayne. You can catch Dj Bankrupt every saturday on Mixtape Mailbox where he plays todays latest underground indie music.
His latest mixtape release “The Punisher” is song of legends to be spoken on, not for the mixing but for the caliber of talent on the tape. This is definitely not a release for the kids, armed with explicit lyrics, but it’s just in time for Halloween for those who dare to make the jump to gangster rap. You can grab hat on Music Money Mixtapes blog, that features the latest in underground talent. Watch for more releases from this dj. Apparently the sponsors are lining up for his Bankrupt Business series release on Coast2Coast mixtapes. It sounds like the Canadian Connection is just getting started!
